Alexander Lawrie (NY, 1828-1917), Village Lane

Oil on canvas (relined), signed and dated at lower left "A. Lawrie 1877," presented in a very fine original gilt wood frame with applied composition ornament. Lawrie studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in the early 1850s before traveling to continue his studies in Dusseldorf & Paris. Upon his return to the United States, Lawrie served in the Union Army. He returned to his art at the end of the war and opened his own studio in NYC in 1866. He remained in the city until 1876, afterwards settling in Indiana.
