Petersburg, VA Needlework Sampler, circa 1830s
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Verse and alphabet band sampler with the maker including the names of her parents and sister and the initials of other family members. The sampler reads, Jane Worsham / was born July 13 1814 / Peters / burg Virginia / daughter of / William and Mary Worsham / Emaline Jannette Worsham 1823 / WW * MW * JEW * EJW / A little health George E. Keily / A little w ('ealth' stitches lost) /WJP.BGA.PB/JW/AJW." Two additional rows of initials follow and beneath the rows is stitched "John E. Worsham * Albert Worsham .JK / WLW / Remember The Sabbath to Keep it Holy xxx / Mary Worsham died December 6 1833 W." There is a record of the sampler maker's birth listed as "abt 1810, Chesterfield, Virginia" to William Worsham (abt. 1764 - before 1811) and Mary Worsham (abt. 1774), both of Chesterfield, Virginia. A brother most likely, a John Worsham, born "abt. 1808 in Chesterfield, Virginia" to William and Mary Worsham. John E. Worsham is listed on the 1860 US Federal Census for Baltimore Ward 1, Baltimore (Independent City), Maryland with household members that include an Albert Worsham and a Mary Worsham, namesakes perhaps of earlier family members. The sampler creates great intrigue and a need for additional genealogical research in tracing Jane Worsham beyond the probable sampler date.
