Circa 1850s, unsigned, oil on canvas, depicts the subject in life's prime; housed in gilt and gesso frame. The antebellum political career of Greensboro attorney John Adams Gilmer (1805 - 1868) was marked by service on both state and national levels. A Unionist before Fort Sumter, Gilmer was to sit in the Confederate House of Representatives from 1864 until war's end.
