Six items pertaining to Private William M. Chew, Co. "E," 31st Virginia Infantry as follows: partially printed company return two pages (12 x 19 in.), May, 1862, in which officers and men are accounted for. Private Chew is named here as having been wounded "in the head"; manuscript company return, two pages (9.75 x 7.75 in.), circa Spring, 1863; (67) officers and men of Company "E" are accounted for. Chew is listed as being in the hospital; (4) war date manuscript receipts, 8vo and smaller, the latest of which, dated April 22, 1865, has Chew buying a sorrel horse "branded U.S. on left shoulder!" William Chew mustered in on March 31, 1862 and served until being paroled on May 18, 1865. During his enlistment the 31st Virginia saw action on fields such as Second Manassas, Sharpsburg and Gettysburg. Chew was fortunate to survive the war after being wounded three times.
