Hand-colored engravings produced for the U. S. Coast Survey by "Hydrographic" parties under U. S. Naval command. Included are "Cape Hatteras and Cove for Anchorage, 1849 (9.5 x 8 in.); "Hatteras Inlet (Harbor of Refuge), 1849 (18.5 x 17.25 in.); "Reconnaissance of Hatteras Inlet North Carolina," 1853 (16.5 x 12 in.).

Primarily known for his watercolor paintings, his depiction of life in his Native North Carolina has endeared his work to an international audience.

Such late antebellum maps were used extensively by both sides during Civil War coastal operations.
