Pencil, watercolor and crayon on paper, manuscript titled "Head Quarters. of Lt. J. O'Neil. Newbern North Carolina," signed "Drawn by J. W. Ashburn" in lower right. Depicted is a modest frame house behind a picket fence with a federal officer on the porch. Three enlisted men and a black woman also inhabit the scene. Professionally matted behind glass in a gold-toned wooden frame with a fabric liner. Sheet 13.5 x 19.5 in.; DOA 24 x 30 in. Both the artist, James W. Ashburn, and the officer named in this drawing served in Battery "H," 3rd New York Light Artillery, which was stationed in New Bern. O'Neil and Ashburn, though surviving the war, were both discharged early for disability.
