Likely South Carolina Marked Civil War Musket
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Percussion, the 41 5/8 in. barrel has a huge .75 in. bore and is secured by two brass barrel bands and a conforming nose cap, the lockplate marked ST. BLASIEN with an "M" proof above, the walnut stock stamped with the date "1857" on the right side of the butt, also stamped "SC" on top of the stock in front of the buttplate and again behind the barrel tang, the ramrod is present.

From a Scotland County, North Carolina estate

Found along the North Carolina - South Carolina border, this old war horse almost certainly served the Confederacy. For a side knife from the same home, see Lot 825.

Original, untouched attic condition, heavily greased with working action, wood chip behind the lockplate; numerous dings to the stock and breech corrosion from heavy use. This weapon, already working, will clean up nicely. The stock from the barrel rings forward appears to be newer wood. If original, it was at one time removed and refinished.
