Pastel on paper, signed at lower left "Bowen Henderson," portrait of a young boy seated in a ladder back chair, circa 1940s, presented in the original frame under glass.

Descended in the family of John Blackmon Makepeace (1852-1902), Sanford, NC

Mrs. Henderson was born in Wilmington and studied art at Peace College and The Pennsylvania Academy of Art, among other places. Upon graduating, she taught at the Academy and later at Wake Forest College and the Centennial School in Raleigh. She established a studio on Fayetteville Street in 1927 and was instrumental in the founding of the NC Art Society and NC Museum of Art. Her home and gardens at 213 Oberlin Road were listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 and is a Raleigh Historic Landmark. Her portraits are in the permanent collection of the NC Museum of Art and the Supreme Court Building in Raleigh.
