American Hepplewhite Gilded Mirror

Early 19th century, white pine with gilt and gesso ornamentation, an urn form finial and grape vines surmount an oval mirror flanked by bell flower swags supported by putti, two dragons perch above the mirror's frame, with three shelves.

A similar mirror, without the dragons or upper shelf, is in the Virginia Museum of Fine Art's collection. Similar mirrors have also been sold by Craig & Tarleton and Hirsch & Adler Galleries. Mr. Clement Conger, a curator for the US State Department from the 1960s through 1980s, bought a pair of similar mirrors from Craig & Tarlton for the state rooms of the White House, where they remain to this day.

Re-gilded; new mirror; several minor cracks; lacking original sconces.
