Watercolor on ivory of William Giles, New Hanover County, NC, identified as William Giles with early pieced backing.

According to family records, William Giles emigrated from Wales in 1794, settling in Wilmington, NC in 1796. A successful merchant, he lost his fortune as a result of the Embargo Act of 1807. He then studied law and practiced a short time prior to his death in 1814.
