John F. Kennedy Inscribed Profiles in Courage
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
(New York: Pocket Books, Inc., 1960), paperback Cardinal Edition, the inside front cover personalized "For Mrs. Slater - / with best wishes - / Kennedy" in bright blue ink. An accompanying index card in Mrs. Slater's hand explains: "This book was signed by John F. Kennedy, Labor Day weekend 1960 during his campaign for the Presidency at SAC Hdqs. at Offutt AFB. He came out of the building & passed us then came back, shook our hand & spoke with us before signing the book - Hers(h)el & Gladys Slater."

By descent from Gladys Slater, the original recipient of Kennedy's inscription.

The consignor, who was with her parents at the signing, claims that JFK paused when he saw her mother holding this copy of Profiles in Courage. Since most of Kennedy's surviving signatures are either secretarial or facsimiles, this is a very rare example of not only JFK's autograph but his handwriting as well.

A well-thumbed, yet intact, paperback. The front cover, which carries the inscription, has a mild vertical crease and is reinforced at the top of the spine with tape. Good condition overall.
