Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1927 at lower right, retaining the artist's paper label affixed to the top stretcher bar, presented in the likely original painted wood frame.

Mathewson is known for his masterful garden and flower paintings, such as the one offered here. He studied in Paris at the Académie Julian and the L'École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, as well as sojourns in Italy, Germany, and New York. By 1911, Mathewson was painting primarily from his cottage studio in Matunuck, Rhode Island.

Light surface grime and stable craquelure; small bulge by top central delphinium with associated 5/8 in. area of paint loss and minor flakes; area of minor re-touch in upper right; minor flaking to frame.
