Born in London to a French family, Sargent's father was an engraver. His family encouraged his artistic studies at the South Kensington School of Art. By 1908, Sargent and his artist wife were living in St. Ives and, while traveling and painting extensively throughout the Continent, they would retain strong ties to Cornwall for the remainder of their lives.
