Louis Mathieu Didier Guillaume was born in Nantes, France and studied in Paris with Paul Delaroche and Pierre Lacour. In 1855, he came to the United States and spent several years in New York City and then in 1857 settled in Richmond, Virginia until 1871 when he moved to Washington DC. He was a sought after portrait painter and also admired for his realistic floral still lifes.

Some edge wear to board; several minor paint flakes to one red rose; some minor flaking and rubbing to frame.
