"Jno. P. Hatch," as Brigadier, one page, octavo, Washington, D. C., February 20, 1863, to John G. Sprague, Adjutant General, State of New York, reading, in part: "Major U. Doubleday 4th N. Y. Arty. whilst serving on the staff of General Doubleday, came particularly under my notice during Pope's retreat from Cedar Mountain. He is a brave and efficient officer, and was mentioned as such in my report...there is a vacancy in the Colonelcy of the Regiment to which he belongs, it gives me great pleasure to recommend him..."
