Confederate Soldier's Letter Home to Arkansas

By Private A. W. Thompson, Co. "C," 6th Arkansas Infantry, Chattanooga, Tennessee, August 18, 1862, to to his parents, probably in Dallas County, reading, in part: "...I still improve in strength, we have got a long march before us I don't know whether I can stand it or not but I expect to...we will move towards Nashville on Buel (sic) we have got him nearly surrounded...I will be marched on a battle field and i can not tell what will be my fait at the end but Oh may I be remembered by God on that day if it should take place..." Included is a note in another hand giving Thompson's military mailing address in Bell Buckle, Tennessee.

The 6th Arkansas participated in all of the major campaigns waged by the Army of Tennessee until war's end. Private Thompson received a mortal wound defending Atlanta on July 22, 1864.
