Signed "Jno. B. Glenn," Camp Pierpont, Virginia, October 17, 1861, to his sister in Utica, Pennsylvania, three pages, quarto, reading, in part: "...we have advanced 10 miles...into Virginia to the small town of Langley, at Little Falls Church near Uptons Hill. We are now pretty near the 'Secesh'. Today a Regt in sight of us were throwing Bomb Shell for about 2 hours at a Regt of Rebels about 4 miles distant...the 'Secesh' did not return the fire but got out of the way...all of us have to hold ourselves in readiness for a fight all the time since we came into Virginia..." The letter retains its original postal cover. Several Pennsylvania soldiers shared the author's name.
