Late 18th century, attributed to eastern Pennsylvania, mahogany, mahogany veneer, poplar and white pine secondary, light and dark wood inlays, two part form, the upper case with applied cove molded cornice, astragal mullioned doors with louvered shelf interior, base with fall front butler's drawer revealing a divided interior featuring eight drawers over eight cubbies centered by a prospect with oval panel, with later leather writing surface over a kneehole with a pull out shelf, flanked by cabinet doors each with short drawer, raised on short French bracket feet. Burled wood veneer to the desk interior; retains some original glass.

Family history states original ownership to Judge William Augustus Atlee (1735-1793), who was appointed by the Pennsylvania Legislature to the Supreme Court in 1777 - 1791 and a trustee in 1779 of the University of the State of Pennsylvania (now the University of Pennsylvania. The desk was later purchased from the judge's descendants.

Break and repair to one foot; surface scratches; veneer chips and losses; lower cabinets lacking dividers; later hinges to upper cabinet doors; both lower doors rebuilt, other restorations.
