William Goadby Lawrence was one of America's foremost marine artists of the 20th Century. Born in New Jersey, he studied at the Art Students League of New York and had his first show at age 21 at Abercrombie & Fitch in NYC.

He provided illustrations for numerous magazines and books, including The Saturday Evening Post and Field and Stream. His paintings hang in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, the Museum of Natural History, and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Museum.
