Born in Maine, Brackett established a studio in Boston where he became known for his still life of game. He exhibited four still life paintings of fish in 1873 at the Crystal Palace in London to great acclaim. A review in The London Art Journal described "the painting of the fish is absolutely perfect; his form is well developed and his coat glitters. It would seem as if tinsel had been used to produce effect; but it is pure art, based on matured knowledge and sound judgement." (qtd. in Artists of the Nineteenth Century and Their Works by Clara Clement and Laurence Hutton, vol. 1, 1879.)

Small hole in caudal fin; over-cleaned; some minor chipping to frame.
