This full length portrait of a man and his dog depicted on a country walk is a typical convention of 18th century English portraiture and relates to a similar work by Wilson in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Wilson was an English painter, printmaker and scientist. Upon moving to London, he was encouraged by William Hogarth to study painting. His portrait work garnered the favors of several gentlemen and Wilson was appointed as Painter to the Board of Ordnance in 1773.
