This preparatory study was completed for a 1952 publication of Les Chants de Maldoror, original written and published in 1868 and 1869 by the Comte de Lautréamont. Buffet created 125 original drypoint engravings for this very limited edition published by the prestigious engraving firm of Daragnès. The printing was limited to 125 copies, as well as 22 copies for collaborators marked from A to V. The copper plates were destroyed following printing.

This successful project propelled the immense popularity of Buffet as an engraver.

Minor foxing and creasing; some toning to paper.
