Immediate Postwar Cover to a White Officer of a Black Regiment

The cover carries a Danbury, Connecticut CDS dated August 9 (1865) and is addressed to Capt. Henry G. Marshall 29th Reg. C.V. (Colored) 25th / A.C. Brownsville Texas. Henry Grimes Marshall enlisted as a sergeant in the 15th Connecticut Infantry on August 25, 1862 and served in that capacity until being commissioned into the 29th Connecticut Volunteers. The 29th served primarily in the Petersburg campaign until being transferred to Point Lookout Military Prison. The regiment spent the summer and early fall of 1865 in Texas, finally mustering out in Connecticut on November 25, 1865.
