English Sheffield Side Knife From Antebellum North Carolina

Mid-19th century, with a double-edged 5 5/8 in. blade, the ricasso stamped GEORGE / BUTLER & Co / SHEFFIELD on one side and engraved ART on the other, cast brass cross guard, bone grip with inset brass plate incised with indeterminate name, possibly Samuel Belyea. Includes original stitched leather sheath.

From an old estate on the line between Forsyth and Davie Counties, NC

This type of weapon was favored during the Civil War.

Overall light pitting to the blade, which also has file marks from sharpening; the leather with mild crazing, but still solid and supple.
