Much of the collection was inherited from Dr. Turner's parents, Royal Navy Captain and Mrs. John Schomberg Hammill and great-grandparents, Admiral Sir Montague Edward Browning and Lady Ruth Boldero Browning. As members of the Peers of the Realm of Great Britain, Dr. Turner's family history is well documented, and additional information on the family is available.

According to family history and early note of provenance accompanying the set, it was to go to the first daughter to marry in each generation in descent from the Neeld family of Grittleton, Chippenham, Wiltshire. The first bride gifted the set was Ann Neeld upon her marriage to Captain Francis French Staunton on March 6, 1809 in Middlesex, Westminster.
