A NC native, Lawing earned his BA from UNC-Wilmington and an MFA from UNC-Greensboro. He was curator of collections at the Weatherspoon Art Museum from 1985 until 1990. He also taught at UNC-Wilmington for over two decades. Lawing's work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including group and solo shows at the Weatherspoon, North Carolina Museum of Art, St. John's Museum of Art in Wilmington, and the Greenville Museum of Art, Greenville, NC.

This was originally compromised by flooding in 2000, but is in good estate condition.
