Pertaining to the performance of Colonel Paul F. Faison of the 56th North Carolina Regiment at the Second Battle of Gum Swamp, NC on May 22, 1863. This action below Kinston saw federal forces capture over 100 of Faison's men. Though the colonel was blamed for the disaster, he survived the inquest that followed and was still with his regiment to surrender at Appomattox. Regt, here the defendant is charged with Neglect of Duty and Misbehavior in presence of the enemy, leading the list of witnesses is Major General Robert Ransom. The document, though secretarial, is signed by Major General Daniel Harvey Hill; the remaining pages are devoted to eyewitness accounts by Robert Ransom, Jr.; an anonymous picket; Col. Rutlidge, 25th NC; Major Grady; Captain A. P. White; Major James Branch; Lt. Edmonson, Adjutant, 25th NC; Captain A. D. Moore, 10th NC Artillery; Lt. Mallett, 46th NC.
