Oil on canvas, signed at lower right, presented under glass within a period gilt frame with composition ornament retaining a label from Veerhoff's Galleries in Washington, D.C.

SS 10 x 7 7/8 in.; DOA 18 x 16 in.

Born in Switzerland, Gutherz's family immigrated to the US in 1851 and settled in Cincinnati, OH. He received broad artistic training - from Memphis, TN, to Paris, to Belgium, to Rome. In 1874, Gutherz moved to St. Louis, MO where he was active with the art department of Washington University and the founding of the St. Louis School and the Museum of Fine Arts. He was commissioned to complete a mural for the Library of Congress in 1896 and remained in Washington, D.C. until his death in 1907.
