Born in Madrid, Spain, Martin Rico is best known for his brightly colored and detailed depictions of life in Paris and Venice. He achieved great success during his lifetime, with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York purchasing one of his paintings in 1881 and the Prado Museum in Madrid acquiring multiple works by him in 1904.
