Born in Auburn, New York, Alexander Van Laer is more closely associated with Litchfield, Connecticut. He was profoundly influenced by the Barbizon painters in France and the Dutch artists of the Hague School. He exhibited frequently at the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Carnegie Institute, and elsewhere.
