Born in Austria, Weiss and his family emigrated to the United States after escaping a Russian concentration camp following WWII. He settled in Nashville, TN but spent several years, from 1956-1960, studying art in New York City. He began his formal studies at the Art Students League, but found his soul and eye by studying with Hans Hoffman, the noted abstract expressionist. Weiss returned to Tennessee where he established the Tennessee Art League and Tennessee Watercolor Society. He was a devoted and beloved instructor at the Watkins College of Art. Recently diagnosed with Alzheimers, Weiss was honored with an exhibition of his work at Haynes Galleries in Nashville to celebrate his achievements and influence to the arts in Tennessee.
