James Bonelli studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and was awarded the coveted Emlen Cresson Scholarship to continue his art studies in Europe. After returning following the outbreak of WWII, he earned his M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1949. Bonelli achieved success as a professional artist and teacher, exhibiting work frequently throughout his lifetime.
