Born in Cincinnati, Birney studied at the Massachusetts Normal School and under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He also spent four years studying at the Munich Academy. He is best known for his reflective genre paintings of figures in repose, such as the work presented here. He exhibited often at the National Academy of Design in New York and was elected an Associate National Academician in 1900.
