Originally from the Netherlands, Berns moved to North Carolina in the mid-1960s to teach at UNC-Greensboro. Berns' exquisitely detailed traditional landscapes are housed in numerous museum collections including the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Weatherspoon Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian, The High Museum, and many others.

This depicts a view of the mountain referred to as "Signal Mtn" by locals now due to the number of signal towers now on top. It makes of the Sauratown Mtn range just west of Hanging Rock State Park in North Carolina.
