Born in England, Lewis studied at the Birmingham College of Arts and Crafts. He emigrated to the United States and settled in New York. He was active in numerous professional organizations, serving as president of the Brooklyn Society of Artists for two years, president of the Art League of Nassau County for ten, and honorary vice president of the American Watercolor Society.
