The October 14, 2004 Washington Post obituary of painter Paul C. Vavlitis notes that he came to America from Cyprus as a teenager and served as an Army Air Force aerial photographer during World War II. Trained as a visual artist after the war, Mr. Vavlitis became highly regarded for his portraits of international political and religious leaders as well as his genre scenes depicting Cypriot life.
