Oil on canvas, unsigned, portraits of Ebenzer Monroe (1810-1896) and Elizabeth Brinkerhoff Monroe (1817-1869), presented in likely original matching gilt composition frames.

Monroe's obituary in the New York Times on April 4, 1896 described Mr. Monroe as "one of the oldest residents of this city." He was born in Boston and moved to New York City in 1831 where he joined the business of Frederick Marquand, one of the largest jewelers in the city at the time. He later became a member of the firm, which was succeeded by Ball, Tompkins, & Black and Ball, Black & Co. He married Elizabeth Brinckerhoff in 1835 and had five children, two of whom survived. He was a member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Historical Society of New York, and the Geographical Society of New York.
