A 2014 article in the Hawaii Tribune Herald announcing an exhibition of Hampton's recent work describes the artist as follows:

"Hampton was raised in Southern California and, as a young adult, moved to Honolulu in 1967, then to Hilo in 1976. Art has always been a way of life for him and he frequently has taken formal classes in all mediums of art.

He describes himself as a “Fluxer,” influenced by the Fluxus Art Movement of the early 1960s."
