Originally from Atlanta, GA, Childs maintains a gallery and studio in Winston-Salem, NC. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the American Society of Portrait Artists.

In 1982, Childs designed a promotional poster for The North Carolina Dance Theaters International tour. Since then some of his dance subjects have included dancers from other companies such as The Atlanta Ballet, The Cincinnati Ballet, Ballet West and the Utah Ballet. Childs has had fundraiser benefit exhibitions for both the Cincinnati Ballet and the North Carolina Dance Theater.
