Circa 1850, Caswell County, North Carolina, poplar and yellow pine, with old but likely later allover black paint, horizontal shaped backsplat, curved armrest with shaped and cut center slats, later upholstered seat, downswept straight legs.

From the Estate of Chalmers/Coleman Springfield Plantation. Family history states that these pieces were purchased for the Springfield Plantation, on River Road in Halifax County, Virginia. Springfield Plantation, built by Dabney Cosby for David and Sarah Chalmers, contains numerous examples of Thomas Day's architectural work as documented in the book Thomas Day: Master Craftsman and Free Man of Color, by Jo Ramsay Leimenstoll and Patricia M. Marshall.

Later but old black paint; later cushions in poor condition.
