After studying at the Art Students League and exhibiting at the National Academy of Design, he left for Paris in 1905. In Paris he met and befriended Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, who became one of his greatest patrons. He returned to New York in 1910, but would continue some work in France and London over the years. He exhibited frequently, including seven sculptures and ten drawings at the Armory Show in 1913.
