Born in Roanoke, Virginia, Gillespie studied at Radford University and the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. By 1943, she was living in New York City and joined the Art Students League.

A prolific and talented artist, Gillespie shared her talents by teaching and lecturing at various colleges throughout her lifetime. Her exuberant dancing and colorful strips and ribbons have graced many public spaces including an installation of 185 sculptures that comprise “Color, Light and Motion” to fill the plaza in front of New York’s Rockefeller Center in 2003. Her sculptures may be found in numerous public collections and museums including the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, NC; Thalian Hall, Wilmington, NC; Asheville Art Museum; and more.
