Horace Greeley Civil War-Date Autograph Letter Signed
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
October 18, 1862, New York City, one page on letterhead, octavo (8 x 5 in.), to Thomas Nelson, Peekskill, New York, reading,"The times are dark and evil; the hostility of the great mass of the democrats to the government & and the war become daily more bitter and open; and we must act with the utmost wisdom and prudence to avoid a disastrous defeat. It seems to me therefore, the dictate of wisdom to nominate our present member of congress, Mr. Haight, who has many friends who will not desert him, and where it will be hard to give reasons for voting against. We have but a chance to elect and that chance is better with him than with any other man. At least so thinks Yours, Horace Greeley." Framed and un-folded to reveal secretarial docketing on verso.

Here Greely writes to Judge Nelson in an effort to drum up support for Congressional "War Democrat" Edward Haight.

Light browning to folds, else very good condition.
