Born in Russia, Gussow emigrated to the United States with his family at the age of nine. He studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League in New York and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris.

A noted modern realist, Gussow's work was exhibited at the 1912 International Armory Show, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Chicago Art Institute, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
