Originally from Denton, NC, Robbie Tillotson earned his masters degree in painting from UNC-Greensboro. By the mid-1970s he was living in New York City, where he was establishing himself as a promising painter and actor in the city. He spent time with Andy Warhol and the factory, and was friends with Alice Neel, Keith Haring and Jean Paul Basquiat.

A portrait of Tillotson by Neel is in the permanent collection of The Museum of Contemporary Art - Los Angeles. An original painting by Tillotson is in the permanent collection of the NC Museum of Art in Raleigh.
