Called by many "the first American modernist painter," Maurer was born in New York City. He studied at the National Academy of Design before leaving for Paris in 1897. While in Paris, he studied briefly at the Académie Julien and befriended Gertrude and Leo Stein who introduced him to avant-garde artists including Henri Matisse and Paul Cezanne.
