From the Collection of a Gentleman, Florida

The Marie de Medici Cycle is a collection of twenty-four paintings by Peter Paul Rubens commissioned by Marie de Medici for the Luxembourg Palace in Paris. The painting offered here is an antique copy of the scene depicting Marie de Medici's marriage to Henry IV of France in Florence following the annulment of his marriage to Margaret of Valois. As Henry IV was not present for the ceremony, the bride's uncle, the Grand Duke Ferdinand of Tuscany, stands in place of the king and slips the ring on her finger.
