Harry Sternberg was born to Russian and Hungarian immigrants in a tenement building on New York's Lower East Side. He began studying at the Art Students League while still in high school and later taught at the League from 1933-1968. He moved to California in the 1950s and served as head of the Art Department in the Idylwild School of Music and Art at the University of Southern California from 1959 to 1969. In addition to his WPA murals in post offices in Chicago, IL, Chester and Sellersville, PA, his works are in prominent public collections including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
