In 1845 William W. Vass began a career in railroad administration. His services during the Civil War were instrumental in moving goods within North Carolina. Included here are the following: Thomas Bragg (brother of C. S. General Braxton Bragg), Autograph Letter Signed, n.p., May 7, 1863, to Major Vass attached to a financial statement of May 11, 1864; Corporal William N. Rose, Co. E, 24th NC Infantry, Autograph Letter Signed, Smithfield, NC, June 22, 1861, one page, to his father; Slave hire document for forty eight days at $1.25 per day; Autograph Letter Signed C. B. Norwich, Washington (DC or NC?), July 15, 1862, one page mentioning a "letter in behalf of an applicant for the Naval School; Autograph Letter Signed H E Braswell, Richmond, April 22, 1863 to Vass in Raleigh, regarding financial matters; Autograph Letter Signed Phil Thiem,n.p., November 12, 1861, to Vass, regarding business. This letter is on Confederate patriotic stationery featuring a ten-star First National flag in color, below in a mount is a facsimile Confederate 20¢ postage stamp; Manuscript Doument Signed by W. J. Hawkins, president of the Raleigh & Gaston R.R., circa 1861; copy of a financial document addressed to S. D. Wallace, President of the Wilmington & Weldon R.R., 1864, mentions 5 bales of cotton shipped through the blockade to Liverpool; an unrelated Union military telegram from Brigadier General E. B. Brown of Missouri; Southern Express Company receipt to Major Vass, Raleigh, NC, April 24, 1863; a Poor Tax receipt for 1863; an engraved portrait of Vass by F. G. Kernan of New York; Haswell, Charles H. Engineers' and Mechanics' Pocket Book (New York: Harper & Brothers,1861), 16mo (6.5 in.); Statistical Pocket Manual, of the Army, Navy, and Census of the United States of America (Boston: D. P. Butler, 1862), gilt pictorial boards, 16mo (6.5 in.).
