Zola Marcus was born in Brooklyn and spent the majority of his lifetime in New York. However, his mature style began to develop fully in North Carolina while attending the 1953 Summer Institute at Black Mountain College. Building upon his training with Hans Hoffman and Fernand Leger in New York and Paris, Marcus’ studies with Joe Fiore and Esteban Vicente at Black Mountain cemented his transition from the representational to the abstract. In 2017, the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center mounted a solo show entitled Zola Marcus: Kinetic Origins.

Several small scattered paint flakes; some minor separation to frame corners; some craquelure.
